Featuring everything from rough sketches and experimental artworks to detailed technical drawings and three-dimensional digital models, Drawing for Sculpture includes work from over 20 sculptors who use drawing as part of their creative process. Encompassing a wide range of materials and techniques, the show includes well-known names from Peter Mountain to Liz West.

For many artists the disciplines of sculpture and drawing as inextricably linked. Some sculptors use drawing as a way of experimenting with ideas without the constraints of having to produce completed 3D objects, while other’s produce drawings as objects in themselves, embodying the same engagement with shape and material that they explore in their sculpture. Drawing for Sculpture features maker’s drawings across a wide variety of approaches, materials and techniques, accompanied by a series of maquettes and small sculptural objects in the gallery showcase.
Liz West's work is to be included in Compton Verney’s summer exhibition which will take you on a fascinating and stimulating journey that looks at the ways in which our visual perceptions have been explored by artists.

From the Impressionists onwards, artists have been inspired by the colour theories of scientific thinkers such as Michel Eugène Chevreul. The most famous examples are the pointillist works of Georges Seurat and his associates, in which colours other than those actually painted on the canvas are generated in the eye of the beholder through the application of small dots of primary colour.

During the 20th century, and culminating in the famous Op art movement of the 1960 onwards, the scientific and philosophical interest in perception extended into ways of communicating movement via static art forms. Early explorations of this can be seen in work by artists such as Helen Saunders, M.C. Escher and Josef Albers using tessellation, pattern, line, mathematics and colour, and sometimes optical trickery, to convey the sensation of movement.

This fascination with the optical in art remains strong amongst artists and makers today and this wide-ranging show features of the works of artists working since the 1960s, such as Jim Lambie, Christiane Baumgartner, Daniel Buren, Liz West and Lothar Götz. Their work is shown alongside later works of those who became stars of the ‘Op art’ movement in the 1960s and who continued to develop and explore new possibilities: Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, Jesus Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc, Peter Sedgley, Jeffrey Steele and Carlos Cruz-Diez.
DOB: 27.06.1992
From: Preston, Lancashire

1. Do you have a favourite colour? Why?
Purple. Fun fact: purple dye was discovered when trying to invent a cure for Malaria.

2. Which is your favourite work of Liz's? Why?
Through No.3. I experienced it first hand on my daily commute to work and it never failed to brighten my day.

3. Where do you find inspiration?
In people, rather than places. I read a lot of autobiographies by funny people or have a rant with friends.

4. What did you train in?
I studied Drama at University of Manchester, focusing on production and playwriting.

5. What did you do before?
I’ve worked as a producer for a site-specific theatre company and as a project manager for visual arts events.

6. What do you do in your spare time?
I started climbing (bouldering) last year, so spend a lot of my spare time trying not to fall off walls.

7. Do you have a favourite quote?
“Decide what your currency is early. Let go of what you will never have.” (Amy Poehler)

8. What song is your current obsession or what music are you listening to?
I listened to Wanderer Wandering by Slow Club roughly 15 times yesterday. The rest of the time I’m listening to a back catalogue of Woman’s Hour and Desert Island Discs podcasts, because I’m slowly turning into my mother.

9. In your opinion, what is the most important issue facing the arts today?
Across the sector, it’s funding and how broader cuts are undermining the value contributed by the arts. But ensuring your practice is commercially viable can be both a necessary evil and a source of creative opportunities.

10. What is the biggest risk you have ever taken?
Often putting adventure before stability – but you only live once!

11. Have you ever experienced creative block? If so, how did you overcome it?
Yes, all the time. For me, it’s accepting defeat, taking a step away from it and trusting that you’ll get it when you come back to it refreshed. Even if that has to be 6am the following morning.

12. Who are your favourite artists or practitioners?
Two physical theatre companies, Rash Dash and Theatre Ad Infinitum.Liz Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09709565723706336339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3327905941709742124.post-72718030767092170192016-12-16T06:45:00.001-08:002016-12-16T06:46:21.789-08:00Liz West presents new body of work in Leeds College of Art alumni exhibitionLiz West | Colour Wheel
Leeds College of Art alumni close 170th year with a special ‘Colour Wheel’ exhibition

Throughout 2016 Leeds College of Art has been celebrating 170 years of delivering art education in Leeds. The College’s final alumni exhibition of the year features a trio of female contemporary artists, Georgina Starr, Liz West and Georgia Lucas-Going, who all studied at Leeds College of Art and have gone on to have highly successful careers. Working with colour, performance and sound, these three artists continue to demonstrate the reach, ambition and values of the College.

The exhibition takes its overarching title from Liz West's planned installation 'Our Colour Wheel.' West wanted to go back to the literal and pedagogical 'Foundation' of her practice - the colour wheel as a teaching tool. She has invited 17 other artists, curators, teachers and friends from her past to submit their personal vision of a colour wheel to her. They will all be framed identically and installed as a grid format.

This exhibition is the final installment in a programme of alumni group shows that have been held throughout the year at the Vernon Street Gallery in the College’s historic 1903 building, celebrating the diverse and ground breaking careers of past students and staff over the last 170 years.
Liz West’s Sevenfold revealed as centrepiece of The Met

When The Met opens its doors in December 2016, following a £4.6 million refurbishment, at the centre of the historical building will be a newly commissioned art installation by internationally renowned artist, Liz West. The installation, Sevenfold, will mark the completion of this project to transform one of the North’s leading cultural live music, theatre and arts venues located in the heart of Bury.

The site-responsive piece will inject vibrant colours and a sense of illusion into the magnificent entrance and staircase of the Victorian neo-classical building. Light is very important to Liz’s work, and this is a space that is flooded with natural light, which Sevenfold will draw upon to highlight the architecture and magnificence of The Met’s 1840s architecture.

Sevenfold takes its reference from Newton’s rainbow sequence of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Seven (six prisms in the main installation plus one mini above the reception desk) individual and vast prisms have been created that use mirrors to further radiate colour and reflect elements of the beautifully restored architecture. As visitors ascend the staircase they find themselves at eye level with the artwork, giving the chance to marvel Sevenfold at its luminous best.

David Agnew, artistic director of The Met, says, “We wanted to celebrate the light and sense of rejuvenation that the restoration of this stunning building has opened up and embraced. The vision of this project is to use the past to illuminate the future, which Liz’s piece perfectly embodies. As people enter the building they’ll be able to enjoy the visual spectacle of Sevenfold as it radiates against the vastness and intricacy of the Victorian plasterwork.”

Liz West says, “I am delighted to be given this opportunity to make my first permanent installation, it is an honour to be asked to make a new work in such an magnificent and multi-purpose setting. The light-based, theatrical and immersive nature of my work ties in perfectly with The Met and the buildings use. I hope that visitors enjoy my work for many years to come and are able to see new elements within the installation every time they look at the piece.”

The refurbishment project has allowed a re-imagination of The Met, which occupies the space of Derby Hall. Built by the 13th Earl of Derby, Derby Hall shares its architect, Sydney Smirke, with the circular reading room at the British Museum. It’s always been one of Bury’s grandest civic buildings having begun life as a Public Rooms, it’s also been used as the Town Hall, council building and since 1979, as Bury Metropolitan Arts Association.
Ancient hand blown glass in the windows of 16th century Little Moreton Hall is the inspiration behind the Hall’s first ever contemporary art exhibition, which opens this autumn.

Autumn Lights, by British artist Liz West, has been commissioned by the National Trust as part of its Trust New Art programme, and is the start of an ongoing programme of work by contemporary artists taking place at Little Moreton Hall under the title The Senses.

“By bringing contemporary art installations into historic buildings such as Little Moreton Hall, we hope to add a new and exciting layer to our visitors’ experience” says Hannah Pierce, the Trust’s Contemporary Arts Programme Manager. “It also enables young, dynamic artists to create new work in spaces which wouldn’t normally be accessible, which can inspire and challenge their creative process.”

Liz West has chosen to explore sight and vision, drawing inspiration from over thirty thousand lead window panes at Little Moreton Hall – and in particular, the glass they contain. “The ancient hand blown glass in the windows of Little Moreton Hall is tinted – very subtly – by trace impurities of copper, iron and magnesium” says Liz. “These historical ‘colourways’ will be the starting point for my artwork which will use natural light to visually alter visitors’ perceptions of the Hall’s many different spaces. These spaces can differ dramatically in atmosphere depending on the amount of light that’s present.”

“By using prisms, filters, refraction and reflection, I want to create a spatial light trail through the Hall which will highlight elements of its architecture that are usually unnoticed or overlooked. This interplay of architecture, light and colour will constantly change as the sun’s natural light shifts through the Autumn season.”

Autumn Lights, by Liz West opens at Little Moreton Hall on 9 September and runs until 27 November on days when the house is open. Find out more at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/littlemoretonhall.
does it feel like to be inside a colour? Does colour change the way you
feel? For the 2016 edition of the Bristol Biennial Liz West invites
visitors to drench themselves in the spectrum.

West has transformed architectural space and turned colour into an
immersive and embodied experience by refracting light through carefully
arranged coloured theatre gels. A vivid world is created, exploring our
individual visual perception and how colour affects our senses.

This new artwork is part of a series by artist Liz West under the
umbrella title Your Colour Perception that began in a residency at
Castlefield Gallery’s New Art Spaces Federation House last year in
Manchester. Our Colour is an immersive light installation, developed
with experts and designed as an experiment in human colour perception.
Using light as a sculptural material, the artist explores the physical,
emotional and psychological effects of colour within a space.

Liz says “Most people
rarely have the experience of being completely immersed in pure colour. I
observe that after moving through the space – walking, running, dancing
– and experiencing every colour, people often go back to the colour
they find most comfortable; they will then stand, sit or lay there for
some time to reflect.”
The exhibition is part of a wider initiative to open up the space to
the public before it undergoes a £5m repair and restoration programme
starting later this year. Grosvenor plans to redevelop this West End
landmark heritage building to create a new retail, restaurant and
community hub. The building will provide a meeting space for the
community as well as 14,500 sq ft of shops and restaurants when it
reopens to the public in late 2017.

Liz West, artist, said: “I am delighted to be given
the opportunity to exhibit my site-specific work “Our Colour Reflection”
within the beautiful architecture of St Mark’s in London. Our Colour
Reflection creates a conversation between the viewer and the setting
using more than 765 mirrors made of coloured acrylic. There are 15
colours in all and the mirrors with diameters of 30, 40, 50 and 60cm are
set at different heights so that they reflect up onto the architecture
and reveal parts of the building that would otherwise be invisible,
projecting colour up into the historic interior.”

Will Bax, Placemaking Director, London estate at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for the public to see inside one of
the West End’s most historic buildings and a chance to enjoy the work of
a renowned British artist. We are looking forward to seeing how Liz’s
work showcases the building’s beautiful architecture and striking
features for all to appreciate.
will transform the interior of the former St John’s Church building housing the gallery by using over 700 mirrors to reflect the gallery
lighting into the roofspace, projecting colour up into the historic interior. Viewers will see themselves in the mirrored surfaces as
they explore the space - creating a dialogue between viewer, artwork and architecture.
She aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer, tapping into our deeply entrenched relationship with colour, and exploring how it can move viewers, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.
Previous large-scale works have included Your Colour Perception, which had visitors returning to Manchester’s Federation House time and time again to witness the space saturated in colour, and her acclaimed installation An Additive Mix at the National Media Museum. Recent months have seen her shortlisted for the prestigious Aesthetica Art Prize, receiving a Bursary Award from the Royal Society of British Sculptors, and complete a major public-realm commission in the Spinningfields district of Manchester.
Spring is coming...

I have been overwhelmed with your kind responses to my first public art commission Through No. 3. Originally destined to only be shown for 6 weeks over the Christmas period, the work is on view indefinitely in Spinningfields, Manchester. If you are in Manchester over the next few months, be sure to track it down, especially if it is a rare sunny day!

I am delighted to have recently been shortlisted for this years Aesthetica Art Prize and will be exhibiting work in the Art Prize exhibition Opening on 13 April at York St. Mary's. Having been chosen to receive one of the RBS Bursary Awards, I will be showing brand new work in the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary group exhibition, previewing on 16 March. Also, I am honoured to have my work presented in a new Thames & Hudson publication 'Lumitecture: Illuminating Interiors For Designers & Architects' by Anna Yudina, which is out now.

Over the Spring months there will be several opportunities to see and experience my work. Below I have listed some upcoming opportunities that you may be interested in. You can find more information about my work by visiting www.liz-west.com.
not only pursues the question, "What is light?" but also offers insight
on 200 projects that demonstrate its transformative power.

Yudina has organised the book around three sections. First, there's light as it transforms space. Second, Yudina addresses lighting that alters one's perception of time. Finally, the author taps into light's power over emotion. Within each section, sub-categories like "color power" and materialization, daylight and contrast, all factor in. The work is comprehensive and up-to-date but its most powerful attribute is the revelation of light's true potential.
Liz West has been awarded Arts Council England Grants for the Arts funding towards a forthcoming major solo exhibition Our Colour Reflection at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, opening in May 2016.

For Our Colour Reflection Liz will present an ambitious new installation using hundreds of coloured mirrors to transform the Neo-Gothic interior of the former St John’s Church building. The work will both reflect viewers as they look at the work, and send colour up into the roof-space of the historic building – creating a dialogue between viewer, artwork and architecture. Exact dates and more information to follow shortly.
have been announced, featuring 100 contemporary artists from around the
world. The shortlist includes 10 artists whose work will be exhibited
in York from 14 April to 29 May at York St Mary’s – York Art Gallery‘s
contemporary art space. The exhibition celebrates excellence in
contemporary art, spanning photography, painting, drawing, installation,
sculpture, artists’ film and performance.

Alongside the exhibited works, there will also be a series of free
lunchtime talks led by key figures in the art world, including artists
and curators. These talks will enable audiences to further their
engagement with the exhibition, and explore best practice across a range
of disciplines. Industry professionals will also provide a unique
insight into the creative sector from both organisational and individual
perspectives.

Shortlisted artists include Ellie Davies, whose submission Between the Trees 14, 2014, was included in The Royal Academy of Arts 2015 Summer Exhibition in London, and Manchester-based emerging artist Liz West, recipient of an RBS Bursary Award 2015, Royal British Society of Sculptors, London.

Andrea Luka Zimmerman, recently shortlisted for Film London’s Jarman Award was also selected for the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition, along with Henry Driver, who has exhibited at Tate Britain and Tate Liverpool, as well as across the UK. Other finalists include Adriana Salazar, David Hochgatterer, Gabriela Torres Ruiz, James Winter, Jennifer López Ayala and Rachel Ara.

A further 90 artists are featured in the longlist. Their work will be
published alongside the shortlisted pieces in the Aesthetica Art Prize
Annual, a publication that accompanies the exhibition in spring.
Showcasing cutting-edge practice from today’s pioneering artists, this
book is an inspiring collection that encourages an awareness of the
innovative work being produced around the world today.

The longlisted artists’ works will also be displayed on a monitor in
the gallery, enabling the audiences to explore the diversity of work
included in the Prize. The longlisted and shortlisted pieces connect
with issues relevant in today’s society and contemplate topics such as
the environment, urbanisation, technology, loss of the individual and
globalisation. The Prize also highlights work that challenges its own
genre and provokes debate around its form and function.
"The role of light in architecture extends well beyond practical
requirements. Light can create an environment, saturate a space with
emotion, and compose spatial illusions. When manipulated in the right
ways, light makes an architectural space livable, shapes it, and guides
the inhabitant through it. As our homes and buildings become
increasingly interactive and connected to the “internet of things”
(where physical objects such as a lamp or microwave are programmed in
the “cloud”), the creative possibilities for lighting are growing
exponentially.

This timely publication captures the most imaginative ideas for the
use of light in homes and buildings. Some 200 projects are organized
into three sections: lighting that transforms space, lighting that
alters the experience of time, and lighting that evokes emotion or
psychological change. Projects range from design solutions— practical
applications and techniques for improving the ambience and function of
our spaces for living and working—to highly experimental or immersive
experiences that induce physiological responses or use entirely new
sources of light, such as bioluminescence or rarefied gasses."
The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD)
has announced the full program for IALD Lighting Perspectives, its
two-day seminar at Light + Building 2016 this March in Frankfurt,
Germany. This one-track conference features individual drop-in sessions
provided to Light + Building attendees free of charge.

During IALD Lighting Perspectives, architectural lighting
designers from around the world will give 60 minute talks – ranging from
collaborative success stories to the latest technological discoveries –
but the common theme among all of these perspectives is an insight on
the light where these cutting edge designers work and live.

Next door to the sessions, IALD welcomes one and all to
the Designers Lounge, featuring an installation by light artist Liz
West. The IALD has involved the talents of West to make the Designers
Lounge an appealing space to meet and connect with others – and with
light! West’s work focuses on the human reaction to pure colour. In
2015, she exhibited more than twelve works in the United Kingdom,
including the internationally acclaimed Your Colour Perception.

As a contributor to IALD Lighting Perspectives, West will
be speaking during her session about her past works, her design theory,
and her newest creation for the Designer’s Lounge.

Liz West will be speaking at Light+Building IALD Lighting Perspectives on Monday 14th March at 10:45 – 11:45am. Her talk REAL COLOUR: LIGHT AS MATERIAL will focus on the uses of light as a material that radiates outside of its boundaries and
containers. She will speak about her past works and future projects as well as her journey of becoming an artist.

is delighted to present the first exhibition in Wales by Liz West.
Comprising new light work made site-specifically, the exhibition Zenith
Blue + Primary Red features a physical demonstration of colour mixing
and optics which fills the space with radiant colour and luminous light
for visitors to explore.

Liz West uses multiple fluorescent sticklights to create intense colour
blocks flooding the entire space with saturate light. By mixing primary
red and zenith blue coloured light together, West demonstrates colour
mixing in practice as the space is flooded with mauve and magenta. When
the human eye focuses for a duration on either colour block, the
complementary colour will be left on our retina as an afterimage when we
turn away or close our eyes.

West creates vivid environments that mix luminous colour and radiant
light. Reacting to the architectural space of Arcadecardiff, West has
created a site-specific installation work which has transformed the room
into an immersive and sensory experience. West aims to provoke a
heightened sensory awareness in the viewer through her works. She is

Castlefield Gallery is excited to be working in partnership with Allied
London in commissioning artist Liz West to create a brand new
installation for Spinningfields, Manchester.

Through No. 3 will be a six-metre long triangular corridor of light and colour installed on Crown Square in Spinningfields from the 25 November 2015 to Wednesday 6 January 2016.

Hot from her major commission An Additive Mix at National Media Museum, Bradford and a Bursary Award from the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Through No.3 continues West’s exploration of colour and light as primary material for artwork. The walk-through structure will encourage visitors to literally look at their surroundings in a different light.

Working across a variety of mediums, West creates vivid environments with the aim of provoking a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer. She is interested in exploring how sensory phenomena can evoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour. Her intuitive and often playful approach to making sculpture and art installations leads to visually rich works that viewers cannot fail but to be drawn into. Underpinning West’s practice is Josef Albers’ colour theories and his Bauhaus teachings, which she references alongside an informed understanding of Newtonian optics and Goethe’s theory of visual perception.

After graduating The Glasgow School of Art in 2007, West now lives and works in Manchester. She was recently commissioned by the Science Museum London to create a new installation for the National Media Museum, Bradford; she exhibited at The Crypt in Leeds Town Hall for Light Night Leeds (9 Oct 2015), and has recently been announced as one of 10 winners of the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Awards 2015.

An Additive Mix is Liz West's most ambitious installation, incorporating
a purpose build 10m x 5m room with infinity mirrors and 250 6ft
fluorescent lamps at the National Media Museum, Bradford. The new work
has been developed over the past seven months to form part of the
exhibition Light Fantastic: Adventures in the Science of Light which
celebrates the UNESCO International Year of Light.

The new work, West’s largest commission to date, turns this occurrence
of natural science on its head; reassembling the diffracted colours of
the rainbow and projecting them to ‘infinity’ as visitors explore the
space.

Within the installation 191 individual colours are combined with a
surrounding series of mirrors, reflecting a dynamic and intense
illumination throughout the space. An Additive Mix draws from the
principle that white light comprises different colours of the spectrum,
called additive colours, and immerses visitors in a physical
actualization of the phenomenon. Those entering the exhibition space
become completely saturated in varied hues that collectively create
white light in a seemingly endless expanse.

Liz used hundreds of LEE Filters in the making of this new work, therefore LEE Filters decided to make a mini-documentary about Liz's practice and most recent works, including the development of An Additive Mix.
Light Fantastic season celebrates the UNESCO International Year of Light.

Liz West's new light installation will take centre stage in a season of free events at the National Media Museum, celebrating the UNESCO International Year of Light.

Manchester-based artist Liz West has been commissioned by the Museum to create a brand new £30,000 installation inspired by the theme. It comprises a purpose-built 10m x 5m room containing approximately 300 coloured fluorescent tubes combined with ‘infinity’ mirrors. Titled An Additive Mix, it takes the principle that white light is composed of different colours of the spectrum (additive colours) and places people in the centre of the phenomenon; saturating them in individual hues that collectively create an intense white glow in a seemingly endless space.

An Additive Mix, which is free to enter and designed to be enjoyed by all ages, builds on themes developed in West’s previous works - most recently the acclaimed Your Colour Perception, which was described as ‘walking through a rainbow’. The new work, West’s largest commission to date, turns this occurrence in natural science on its head; reassembling the diffracted colours of the rainbow and projecting them to ‘infinity’ as visitors explore.

Liz West said:

“This is a body of work that I have dreamed of being able to make for a number of years. To be given the opportunity as part of the Museum’s celebration of light is thrilling and very fitting.”

“Artworks I remember seeing as a child are the ones in which I was completely immersed, and that’s what I hope An Additive Mix will achieve: taking people out of the ordinary into the extraordinary, and staying in their memories for a long time."

Light Fantastic: Adventures in the Science of Light (18 July – 1 November), forms part of the National Media Museum’s Festival of Light. Throughout 2015 the festival, inspired by the UNESCO Year of Light, will be home to exhibits, family activities, a series of contemporary science events, a Lates (late-night opening) and more.

Entrance and activities are free.

Your Colour Perception was installed in Castlefield Gallery’s 5000 square feet New Art Spaces Federation House fourth floor gallery in Manchester for a 2-day only exhibition on 31st January and 1st February. The work was developed in direct response to the space prior. West reacted to the architectural space using colour and light to create vast immersive installation art.

West transformed Federation House into a sensory, visceral experience by overloading it with artificial chromatic light in which to test the psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual responses visitors experience during their encounter. This work utilises the darkness outside to raise the strength of the illumination and colouration in the work. Using this enormous space to install a light work in the darkest Winter months allowed the colour to bleed with more saturation than if displayed any other time of the year.

Amongst the appreciation for Your Colour Perception were articles on BBC News: The Big Picture, Frame Magazine, urdesign mag, Professional Lighting Design Magazine, Illumni, Creative Boom, The Creator's Project, Hi Home Magazine (Russia), Trendland and Design Boom to name a few. As a result Liz will be collaborating with the International Association of Lighting Designers and BDP in April for an artists talk in Manchester. Details to follow.
27 February - 17 April

The latest in the R[eff]uge series, supported by Arts Council England and Plymouth University, UNNATURAL PLEASURES focuses on synthesised experiences and the discomfort which is often the unfortunate by-product of attempts to comfort ourselves through man-made items. Liz West has made new site-specific work Complementary Afterimage which uses multiple fluorescent sticklights to create intense colour blocks flooding the entire space with purple light. Featuring work by Liz West, Alana Tyson, David Sargeant, Johanna Schmeer and Yvette Hawkins.
Subjective Mixtures #1, Bloc Projects Billboard Commission, Sheffield
2 - 30 March

Liz West’s new work Subjective Mixtures #1 was created in situ for the Bloc Billboard on Jessop Street, Sheffield. West explores drawing as something not confined to two dimensions. During the creation of her work, whether making arrangements of objects and lights or drawing on paper, she uses elements of composition and arrangement to experiment with colour and space, often creating work is that is harmonious with its surroundings and examines our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour.

West uses light as a material that radiates outside of its boundaries and containers, highlighting its significance within our understanding of colour. Her interventions and installations forge new spaces and environments, in which colour floods a physical site through a rich layering of light or disrupts the flatness of white paper.
Through - Liz West, &Model, Leeds
11 - 29 March

Within physical architectural spaces, Liz West uses light as a material that radiates outside of its boundaries and containers. She playfully refracts light through using translucent, transparent or reflective materials, directing the flow of artificial light. These ephemeral interventions forge new spaces and environments, by flooding a physical site with a rich mixture of light. This project forms part of a recent series of spatial light works based on the artist’s research into colour theory and light fields. The saturated light in this work casts sumptuously vivid colour reflections out of its containing space, through the windows, and reflects onto the road below. In the evening the darkness outside raises the strength of the illumination and the colour intensity in the work.

This work will be viewable from outside the gallery only.
